Ribosomes are tiny chemical granules found throughout the cytoplasm, and on the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum. Ribosomes play an important part in making proteins. They help to read parts of the genetic code stored in the cell's DNA. They then use the code to assemble protein molecules. Rapidly growing cells need to make lots of proteins, and they often contain thousands of ribosomes.
